And my Belarusian grandmother Sosha Rive took the name Sylvia in the US. Maybe because of the initial S sound and the last consonant V sound that matched Sosha Riva? In any case, more evidence that there was no particular match up between Sosha and some American name, any more than any other Jewish name and American name. 

This dismissing of the Yiddish name by the rabbi reminds me of an Arno Penzias (Nobel Prize winner) story. Some Hebrew school teacher insisted his daughter’s Yiddish name was invalid and needed to be discarded for a Hebrew name because vaguely of the reestablishment of a Hebrew in Israel...And Arno responded, “Golda Meir gets her mail.”
