There is a treasure trove of information about  "landsmanshaftn (a mutual aid society, benefit society, or hometown society of Jewish immigrants from the same European town or region)" at Center for Jewish History in NYC. These mutual aid societies were mini B'na B'rith type organizations that maintained plots at local cemeteries in addition to offering welfare benefits to their member.
