Synagogues of Eastern Europe #general #yizkorbooks

Not specifically to do with genealogy, but some genners may have come across some hints of this in their research. The few historical sites I've managed to navigate haven't been useful--likely my fault, not theirs.

Query: Was there a pattern/habit/tradition in eastern Europe to just not bother to include cellars/basements when building a synagogue? (Or, in some cases, a rabbi's house.)

It was suggested to me ages ago that since so many pogroms were sparked by rumors of bad things going on in those cellars, it seemed a wise preventive to just not have a cellar at all.

Thanks. -- Frank Schulaner, Kealakekua [there is such a place], HI
