Discussion Group that the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum has put online the first two volumes of the Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, 1933-1945: Volume I - Early Camps, Youth Camps, and Concentration Camps and Subcamps under the SS-Business Administration Main Office (WVHA). 1,796 pages. Entries on 110 early camps, 23 main SS concentration camps, hundreds of subcamps, and more. Volume II - Ghettos in German-Occupied Eastern Europe. 2,096 pages. Describes ghettos created by the Nazis in Poland and the Soviet Union -- including many places once in Galicia. (See the listings for "Distrikt Krakow" and "Distrikt Galizien.") "Each entry discusses key events in the history of the ghetto; living and working conditions; activities of the Jewish Councils; Jewish responses to persecution; demographic changes; and details of the ghetto's liquidation. Personal testimonies help convey the character of each ghetto, while source citations provide a guide to additional information." For a fuller description of the museum's enormous project to document over 42,000 camps, ghettos, and other sites of Nazi persecution, and for links to download the books, see https://www.ushmm.org/research/publications/encyclopedia-camps-ghettos Renee Renee Stern Steinig Dix Hills NY genmaven@... |
