Just "2 cents": I changed, like many Israelis, my surname and my
brother stayed with his name. Also it is known that in rabbinical
circles often the groom adopted his wife's family name when she came
from a prestigious Rabbinical family. A famous case is the HOROWITZ
family that almost all HOROWITZs are leveim (Levies) exept for
"outsiders" who adopted that name for prestige.
