Yizkor- Books-In-Print (YBIP) Indexing Project Underway #galicia

The Yizkor-Books-In-Print project is pleased to announce that all
newly published books will include an index.

Here is the YBIP web site displaying all our publications:
https://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/ybip.html

These Yizkor (memorial) books were originally written by survivors and
former residents of the destroyed Jewish communities who gathered
mainly in Israel, the US and South America. They initially wrote down
informally their memories of their towns and shtetls in the 1950s and
1960s. These writings were eventually compiled into books in the
Yiddish and Hebrew languages. The books provide first-hand accounts
of the cultural, religious and social life in these communities, their
hopes for salvation, their dreams, their everyday struggles and their
tragic destruction by the Nazis and their collaborators. The books
contain memories and histories of the towns and include many names
and photos of residents and victims that are useful to Jewish
genealogists looking for their ancestors and other researchers.

There were over 2000 such memorial books written. This unique body
of literature had not been available to the English reading public. Now
more than 120 of them have been fully translated into English in the
Yizkor Books project of JewishGen and appear on the project web site
http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/along with about 650 partially
translated books.

Although many of the books include indices to the Hebrew or Yiddish
names in the text, it is not easy to find these names in the translated
(to English) books. Indexing these books will help readers and
researchers find names of relatives that they did not know about or
find out about those that they did know of. Additionally these books
provide us knowledge of the environment of our ancestors.

The entire indexing project is done by volunteers and each and every
one of them deserves a big =E2=80=9Cthank you=E2=80=9D for their hard work =
and
dedication.
