Many marriage certificates from Poland in the 19th century (and also in the 20th century) state that
"Nowożeńcy umowy przedślubnej nie zawarli,"
which translates as "The newlyweds did not conclude a prenuptial agreement." The same stipulation can be found in Russian wedding certificates of the era. What did this mean in the condition of the times and what was its purpose?
