I'd suggest tracking down the photography studio to see what you can find out about G. Grossman and the time period in which he was active.  

I checked Langdon's List of 19th & Early 20th Century Photographers, but the only Grossman listed there had the first name Herman.  The New York Public Library also has a Photographers' Identities Catalog, which you can read about here.  Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, I can't get the URL for the catalog itself to work.   

 

Another alternative would be to find G. Grossman in NYC in Census records.
