Shaeffers (Chaim and  Dovid Aryeh ) can be found attending the former and nearby synagogue in Chesterfield, CT-Possibly these are family. See link below.

Salem was and still is tiny and very rural. A classic New England village. We drive thru the town on a regular basis and patronize farms in the area. Much-but not all- of the town has very rocky soil which would not have been very arable, but may have supported grazing, dairy farming, etc.

Colchester,  the town just to the north of Salem,  had a large Jewish population around the turn of the century, many of whom were poultry farmers.
