I am searching for connections to the surname HOLZAPFEL or the city/county of Holzappel.
Since 2004 I have been leading student trips to Lithuania where I collaborate with a university in Klaipeda. We visit Ponar, IX Fort and the ghettos in Kaunas and Vilnius. I have visited with students who lost grandparents at these places and with students whose family members collaborated with the Nazi program. On the last trip a student whose grandfather was Litvak connected with some of her heritage. Every student is impacted at some level.
On my last trip to the Riga Ghetto, I was scanning names when I discovered three HOLZAPFEL’s and then two more. This is an unusual surname, so I was surprised to find my surname on the lists. When I returned home I discovered many more on JewishGen and lists at various of the Holocaust sites. All of this was totally new for me.
My family came to the USA, many generations ago, but their history in
Germany seems unclear with a variety of competing stories.
I have no idea where this might lead, but I am seeking to see if there are connections to be made.
