I would suggest checking a few websites. One contains volumes of the American Jewish Year Book in PDF, which you can search. The yearbook didn't begin until 1899, but perhaps the rabbi was still with the same synagogue. You could also try the Synagogues of New York City list on the website of the Museum of Family History. If neither of those pan out, contact the Center for Jewish History in NYC. The organization has a map of New York historical synagogues online. One of the librarians may be able to help you track down the name of the synagogue where this rabbi worked. You can e-mail them at inquiries@....
