This was very helpful, and answered a question that had long gone unanswered.
My maternal grandmother's sister, Lena Lundin/Lande came to the US first from Bialystok. The person to whom she was going in Chicago (listed on her passenger manifest) was Harry Lapinsky, who I have now discovered was a key founder of the Chicago Bialystoker Landsmanschaft. He probably sponsored many other Bialystokers who did not have relatives in the US yet.
