Thank you to everyone who responded to me on this.  To summarize there appears to be no standard, and tools available on Ancestry and elsewhere on the internet can be helpful in translating.

The link to the document explaining German Registrations in Ancestry is particularly useful, but if interested you may want to try this link https://www.ancestrycdn.com/support/de/2016/11/germancivil.pdf  as the one given was kind of wonky and kept booting me out.  I found it in the Support area by entering German records in the search field..
