My 2nd great grandfather (Solomon Hochstein) and my 3rd great grandfather (Jacob Hirsch), both from New Orleans, served in the European Brigade, Louisiana Volunteers.

The National Parks Service maintains a website where the National Archives Records of Civil War Soldiers are searchable by name and state:  https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-soldiers.htm.  This will give you the regiment and rank for each soldier. e.g.,

Hirsch, J.

There is a link on that page if you want to order individual records for individual soldiers through the National Archives and Records Administration.  For Louisiana, the NARA Records are in Microfilm Roll M378.

If you can get access to Ancestry.com's subsidiary Fold3, the actual microfilm records of the individual's service record are there and searchable.

Happy hunting!
