My great-grandfather, Leib  Swartz, was a fusgeyer.  He left Sculeni (the one in Romania, near Iasi, not the one across the river in Moldova) in 1900.  He made his was to Hamburg, then Halifax, and eventually got a homestead in Saskatchewan.  The details of his journey across Europe are lost to history, but the story in Canada is fairly well documented.  I can't be of much help on the Romanian part of your research, but I'm very interested.
