Early this year the eminent scholar Bart Wallet was appointed professor of
Jewish history at the University of Amsterdam. We have the privilege of interviewing him. We shall discuss the role of Sephardim in The Netherlands in the 19th Century Jewish; the tension between Sephardic identity and cooperation with Ashkenazim; the shifting meaning of Sephardic identity; the changing role of the Western Sephardic diaspora in the 19th and 20th Centuries; and the role of Sephardim in 20th Century Netherlands. Prof. Dr. Bart Wallet is Professor of Early Modern and Modern Jewish History, in particular of Amsterdam, at the University of Amsterdam. He is co-editor-in-chief of Studia Rosenthaliana and an editor of the European Journal of Jewish Studies. He is one of the editors and authors of Reappraising the History of the Jews in the Netherlands (London 2021) and has published extensively on subjects related to the history and culture of Dutch Jewry.
