Re: Did you go to a Jewish summer camp? #usa

Two weeks at Camp Wise on Lake Erie was pretty common if you grew up Jewish in Cleveland, Ohio in the forties.  My camping memories from my one stretch there are pretty blurry.  Sure, there were all kinds of camping activities and Jewish cultural activities, but I only recall two things clearly.  The first was getting my Shark Badge for swimming a quarter-mile in filthy Lake Erie's choppy water in the rain.  ("Stay underwater and you won't get wet!"  the counselors yelled)  The second was the stink from the adjacent chemical plant when the wind blew the wrong way.

Not the pristine outdoors environment one thinks of but we did with what we had. 🙄

I attended Camp Young Judaea in Texas in the 60s and worked as a madrich there 1967-70. I also worked at Camp Tel Yehudah (Young Judaea’s National camp) in Barryville NY in 1971.

Those experiences were so important in my life.
