My father had a similar story. His father was taken prisoner of war in the early days of WWI to Kassel, Germany. His mother died of typhus in 1918 in Lodz. He and his orphan siblings were sent away to relatives in different countries. My father ended up in the Jewish orphanage of Kassel on Giessen Str. He lived there until 1924 when he went on his own at the age of 14. It seems that there were a lot of Jewish children living in orphanages after WWI. -- Dominique Anderson Charlottesville, VA
