My grandfather, Richard Glaser, was a Feldwebel in the Austrian Hungarian army in World War 1.

My understanding is that a Feldwebel is similar to a sergeant or a staff sergeant - in other
words, a non-commissioned officer.

In one of the postcards that he sent home to my grandmother, >from the army, he says that his
"boy" was captured by the Russians, and his orderly was injured.

Was it typical for a sergeant to have an orderly and/or a "boy"? I would have thought that this
would be a privilege of a regular officer.
