I sent away to the Austrian Kriegsarchiv for the military records of my great great grandfather,
Wilhelm Stein. I received back his records for the year 1848 to 1856. He served for 8 years.
The record seems to say that he was discharged in 1856.
However, in the record of his marriage in 1857, it says that he received regimental approval,
and in the birth records of his children, he is identified as a soldier in a certain regiment.
Is it possible that he re-enlisted?
What was typical of Jews vis-a-vis the army in those days?
