Re: Austro-Hungarian Passports #hungary

Regarding old passport applications:

I know that the Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg Regional Archive in Nyiregyhaza,
Szabolcs County, does have passport applications >from the early 1900s for
various towns in these three counties. (Perhaps the span of years if
greater--I did not inquire.) I didn't visit the archive in person, due to
their vacation schedule, but hired a researcher to look at these for me, but
he did not provide (what I considered to be) professional results, only
offering a few scribbled names and dates, so I don't know what information
these applications contain or in what form they exist. If this regional
archive has this type of record, perhaps other local ones do as well. In
contacting the archive by e-mail I had been told that the records could not
either be photocopied or photograhed, but perhaps that edict has changed or
is negotiable.

The website for the archive is:

http://www.szabarchiv.hu

...but it is in Hungarian. The contact information provided is:

Szabolcs–Szatmár–Bereg Megyei Önkormányzat Levéltára

lezési cím: 4400 Nyíregyháza, Széchenyi u. 4. Pf.: 187.
Telefon 42/414 313, 42/311 280 Fax: 42/ 414 313

with two e-mail addresses given:

E-mail: leveltar@nyirbone.hu and leveltar@iif.sabinet.hu

VezetŒ: Dr. Nagy Ferenc igazgató

Dr. Ferenc Nagy, listed above, is the archive director I was in contact with
several years ago. If you were to write to him in English (which he speaks)
you should (eventually) expect a reply >from him.
He seemed most cooperative in welcoming visitors and researchers to his
archive, but cannot provide research assistance himself.
