Sorry, but the word "but" in your English translation is not in the original
German text of the anecdote. And it does make a huge difference, and changes
the meaning of the statement. Proper translation would be: "not a Communist
Fascist." In this sentence it appears that the person making the statement is
combining the two definitions as one and the same, and denies being either
one, rather then saying he is not one, BUT the other.
