In 1939, a SPERBER relative born in Sieniawa, Galicia and living in Vienna
listed on a concentration camp document that a Fanny GROSSBARD was his closest
relative in Vienna. Through the usual databases I found that this woman was Fanny
KUPFERSTEIN recte BINDER (b. 1892, d. 1943 Auschwitz) married
in Vienna to Adolf GROSSBARD (b. 1889, d. 1935 Vienna).
Their daughter was a Herta GROSSBARD (1918-1982) who came to the States in
1939 and married Hugo REBITZER (aka RIES) in Alabama, and the couple very soon
thereafter lived in NYC and later Haworth and North Bergen, New Jersey.
When coming to the States, Herta GROSSBARD listed a Jennie HALPERN in
Brooklyn as her aunt. In the 1940 U.S. census I found at the exact address on
Herta's manifest a Jennie HALPERN (b. 1884), likely the widow of Julius HALPERN
with children Isadore HALPERN (b. 1908; a school teacher), George
HALPERN (b. 1918; also a schoolteacher), and Bessie (b. 1909, married MINSKY).
Anything ring a bell?
