(Czech Republic) Jewish Gravestones Used as Cobblestones in Prague to be Returned to Old Jewish Cemetery #austria-czech

Jan Meisels Allen

Excavation work in Prague unearthed pieces of Jewish headstones which now
will be returned to the Czech capitol=92s Old Jewish Cemetery resulting from
an agreement between the City and the Jewish community. Evidently the
pieces were removed >from the 19th century cemetery for street building in
the late 1980s. The majority of the stones were chopped into squares and
used at Wenceslas Square and Na Pikope , a popular shopping thoroughfare.

Prior to World War ll the Jewish population of Czechoslovakia was about
35,000, by the end of the war 50,000. Today the Jewish population is about
8,000 according to the BBC. There is a project underway, Finding the Lost
Face of Jewish Cemeteries to identify the gravestone fragments.
