Dear Avraham,

You can find infos on Rabbi Winter in the book Shem Hagedolim me
Eretz Hagar by R' Pinchas Selig Schwartz.
The great work on Hatam Sofer and his talmidim by R' Aleksander
Kunstlicher, also says biographical data, and shows the gravestone
and inscription.

Since Rabbi Winter lived in Stomfa between early 1850s and and his
death in 1893, the Stomfa records may tell many things on his family.
These records may kept in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Shtempan is Stomfa, former Pozsony County in old-Hungary, now Stupava
in Slovakia. The name Shtempan came >from the German version Stampfen.

Rabbi Raphael Halperin in his encyclopedia Etz Hayim lists haRav Eliezer
Wintner #2351 as one of the great rabbis of Hungary. He was rabbi in
Breif(sp!) and Av Bet Din in Shtempan (sp!). He was a disciple of haRav
Moshe Sofer.
He died in 1893 at the age of 41.
I would appreciate ANY information: scholastic, rabbinic, family,
genealogy,
etc.
Thank you all'
Avraham Ofek
