I think, the explanation is much simpler. The original name might have been
Metzler (butcher) which, due to a mistake by the notary or an other
official, was misread as Meixler (misreading "t" as "i" and "z" as "x" is
easy and many similar mistakes can be found in Jewish BMD registers in
Hungary where many rabbis spoke Yiddish or Hungarian better than the
official German language).
