Shtile Chupa #unitedkingdom

I have written about the so called "stille chupah" on my website . A
correspondent sent me this message

I notice that you wrote about a "schtille chupah" and I also came across
this terminology while researching my grandmother's story. Apparently during
the Ukrainian pogroms in my grandmother's shtetl, a "schtille chupah" was
performed for a couple in the family's home, done in secret with no noise or
music as so not to attract unwanted attention >from the pogrom bandits.

.. this indicates where the term originated ie literally a "silent
wedding" - it came to mean in UK merely a civilly unregistered marriage -
whether it was silent or not was secondary.
