There seem to be a large number of questions about fairly basic Hebrew or
Yiddish names (Velvel, Faivel, Zavel) and their Russian variants (ie.
Shlioma). Shlioma is simply a Russian variant of the Hebrew name Shlomo. I
have seen it perhaps hundreds of times on revision lists and vital records. I
would heartily recommend to everyone Boris Feldblyum's book on Russian-Jewish
given names. You can look up almost any Russian-Jewish first name or variant
and it will tell you the root name. It is available >from Avotaynu Press
