Re: Jewish community of Prossnitz #austria-czech

David & Diana Laufer <dlaufer@...>

Amira Kohn-Tratner and Dan Huth both recently posted enquiries to this SIG
regarding Prossniitz, Moravia (now Prostejov) where some of their ancestors
had been born.

My grandfather Julius BRAUN was also born in Prossnitz in 1872, but married
in Vienna in 1899 and died in Vienna in 1939. According to the record of
this marriage Julius' parents were Eduard BRAUN and Leni geb. WEISS.

When I made enquiries of the Czech National Archives for his birth record
the answer I received was:
further to your request, please be informed: The registers of Jewish
community of Prostejov are not preserved for the years 1829-1873. The most
of original volumes were destroyed by nacists during the WW II. Due to this
reason we are not able to convey you data you are looking for.
We recommend you to send your request to the district archives in Prostejov
(Statni okresni archiv Prostejov, Trebízského 1-3, 796 40 Prostejov), where
could be deposited the Residents Registration Cards, police records and the
list of census - documents - in which the information about family Braun
also could be preserved.

Although I have not yet followed up on this recommendation I pass it on to
others for their information.

Also, shortly afterwards I received a comment >from another SIGGER:
"I know that Prostejov catholic duplicates (of Jewish records) 1846-1873
are stored in Central archive, Prague"

I did later receive >from the Czech National Archives the advice that:
Eduard BRAUN died of tubercolosis at the age of 41 on 4.2.1881 and was
buried two days later 6.2.1881 in Prossnitz, and had been married for
12 years.

Can anyone tell me about the given name Leni ? Is it a name in its own
right, or the diminutive form of another name such as Helene ?
