I have been trying in vain to locate any information on my
great-grandmother, Rebecca COHEN, her parents and siblings when they lived in
Perhaps someone can help me.
A. Facts and what I believe to be facts.
My great-great grandparents Israel COHEN (c. 1865) and Av__de COHEN (c.
1862) were born in Eastern Europe (perhaps Galicia) and lived for some years
in England before migrating to the U.S. I do not know when they arrived in
the U.K. or where they lived in the U.K. I believe the family lived in
London although some family speculate Liverpool.
My great-great-grandparents had five children: Rebecca COHEN (c. 1892),
Jennie COHEN (c. 1894), Gertrude COHEN (C. 1896) Benjamin COHEN (c.1900), and
Rose COHEN (c. 1901). The preceding information is >from 1910 U.S. census
data which notes that all children were born abroad and that the family
immigrated together in 1900. However, family legend has then arriving in New
York to learn of the death of Queen Victoria. This means they would have
had to leave England before but arrive shortly after Jan. 22, 1901. If so,
there is a likely discrepancy in the birth of the last child, Rose COHEN,
who was noted in 1910 being born in 1901 overseas (unless she was a newborn
at departure or born on ship).
B. When did my great-great grandparents arrive in the U.K.?
There is an 1892 London birth at 33 Great Garden St. for one Rebecca COHEN
to an Israel and Maria COHEN. The birth year and the father's name
correspond to known facts. Family legend suggests Maria's name -- at least in
the U.S. -- was Anna so this may not be their record. I could not find any
likely U.K. census matches in 1891 for this family. Question: Would there
be a record of their arrival in the U.K.?
C. Where did my great-great grandparents and their children live in the
As noted above, it is possible that the family lived at 33 Great Garden
St., but that is far >from clear. Would there be some other non-census
information indicating where they lived?
C. When did they leave?
I believe the family left England for the U.S. in 1900 or very early-1901
so there would be no 1901 census information for them. Many searches of
U.S. immigration information has turned up empty. I cannot find them on a 1900
census here either. Would there be some record of their departure >from
I am most grateful for any assistance.
Chag sameach v'shabbat shalom.
