Heritage's next event will be an illustrated Talk by Rabbi Dr. Andrew Goldstein on = Lady Montefiore's hitherto unpublished diaries. The Talk will take place on Thursday 16th March, 7.30pm at The Comfort Inn (formerly the San Clu = Hotel), Victoria Parade, Ramsgate, Kent CT11 8DT. RMH members free, visitors =A35.00. Rabbi Goldstein=92s research into the Montefiores has uncovered = previously unpublished material on their travels in Europe. The talk will include material >from Judith=92s handwritten diaries. In May 1816 the = Montefiores left their home in London and made for Dover via Dartford (where they had breakfast) and dinner in Canterbury before arriving at 10 p.m. Next = morning they left on a small packet boat, The Dart, arriving in Calais four and = a half hours later. The tour took them as far as Marseilles before = returning home by August. Six months later they set out again and this time to = travel to Italy including visits to Rome, Venice and Naples. In Naples Judith describes an expedition to the very rim of Vesuvius. The diaries give fascinating details of continental travel by the upwardly mobile middle class at the beginning of the 19th century.
