Fw: Nine-Days #general

Judith Romney Wegner presented an excellent explanation of that period of
national mourning referred to as "The Nine Days".

It is a pity that she added an inaccurate assessment of the degree in which
this period is observed in Israel:
In Israel, because the establishment of the State is widely perceived as
the first step in the redemption of the Jewish people, many of those who
observe Tish'ah B'Av at all fast only until noon rather than all day long.
ALL Orthodox Jews observe Tisha Be'Av in its entirety (unless medical
reasons preclude), both in Israel and throughout the world. The discussion
as to the relevance given the re-establishment of the Jewish State, is
beyond the scope of JewishGen. If I may be permitted to convey my personal
opinion, this period commemorates the seige of ancient Jerusalem which
culminated in the destruction of the Temple on Tisha Be'Av, bringing with it the great Exile of the Jews >from Eretz Yisrael. One can regard this period as the foundation stone of the suffering Jews experienced over the last 2000 years.
