If they were "famous" then they might have their name listed in the bound
volumes guides to the NY Times obituaries.
If they weren't famous, and you think someone in the family might have put a
PAID obituary in the Times, you can always check the times obituary pages
around the time of your relative's known date of death.
There are so many papers in the NY area -- and there used to be even more --
that it is hard to say what paper your family might have used for a obituary
unless you know what papers the family used to buy and read. Did they read The
World Telegram and Sun? The Post? The Forward? et cetera!!
Have you obtained their death certificates? Have you visited their graves?
Perhaps these might be sources of information that will help your search.
