Russian Jews in italy #general

A possible source of information has come to my attention. In the late 19th
century and early 20th century (pre-1933) there were a series of spa towns in Italy
frequented by Russian/Belarussian Jews.
A cousin, Mikhail TALALAY, is researching the history of the Russian
diaspora in Italy (he lives in Florence). It seems the Russian Orthodox church was
quite active in many such towns, setting up traveler's houses, etc., as well as
establishing Russian-speaking communities.
Indeed, once I made contact with Misha, he told me that he found a record
of the death of an Emanuel TALALAY >from Mogilev, entered in the archives of the
local Lutheran community in Merano in 1892. The young man was trying to recover
from TB.
Why the Lutheran archives? Misha will investigating why, perhaps in this
year there was not yet an organized Jewish community in the town. He is also going
to contact the local Jewish community and ask them as well.
Additionally, when relating the story to another cousin, Victor TALALAY of
Toronto, Victor told me that his great-grandmother, the mother of Sophia Brosterman
TALALAY - originally of Gomel, spent the years 1920-30 in the same city, Merano.
A Russian doctor by the name of Messing was promoting the spa towns and
many people came. If you were a Russian-speaking Jew and thought this would help,
you would naturally go to where a Russian-speaking community was available to help
you, thus I would assume, relationships perhaps sprung up between certain towns.
perhaps people >from Mogilev and Gomel had settled in Merano and encouraged others
to visit.
This diaspora was news to me, as I am sure it is exciting news to others,
and perhaps opens other avenues of research.
We had previously known about Minai TALALAY (male), born 1873, who had died
at the age of 27 in Carlsbad, also searching for a cure. He was >from the branch
that had previousl resettled >from Mogilev to Moscow, in late 19th century.
Misha is of course now looking for TALALAY as his own reserch project
proceeds.
We don't normally look for Belarussian Jews in Italy, but I am sure that
these two references listed above are not the only incidents!!
This is about all I have right now, but I will post more information as I
learn about it.
Good luck to all.
