Would some kind scholar help me with the translation of names on my
great-grandparents' ketubah dated 18 April 1875 in Florence, SC:
"...between the bridegroom, Louis Harrison (Aryeh Yehuda), son of Rabbi
Noach Emer, and bride Rebecca Jones, Rivkah, daughter of Rabbi Yisrael Yonah.
Rabbi: Chaim ben Zev HaBazak.
It is witnessed but the signatures are illigible."
I've written to synogogues in Florence, Spartanburg and Charleston to see if
they have records for either any individual named on the ketubah. Nothing yet.
Family lore has it that Louis and his Rabbi father had the name Hamer when
they came to America. But no record has been found of that surname.
Rebecca's family took the name Jones, was originally Yonah, pronounced Jonah.
I found records for her family in This Happy Land by Nagy.
But would like to have Louis Harrison's real name so I can search for that.
Thanks for any help at all.
