Re: Meaning of phrase and event #general

Paul Silverstone <paulh@...>

Mendel Beiliss was falsely accused of murdering a Christian boy in
Kiev. The boy's mutilated body was discovered on a Sunday morning in
March 1911. Beiliss was charged with killing him to use the blood for
matzahs for Passover. It was a very celebrated case and he was
eventually acquitted.
See the book "Blood Accusation: the Strange History of the Beiliss Case"
by Maurice Samuel. 1966.

Russian district names #general

Estelle Wolfers <EWolfers@...>

Does anyone know how to find a named district in Russia? I am looking for
the location of the village of Vidz in Kovna Geberna. Shtetl-seeker can
find several possibilities for Vidz in Russia and Belarus, but I can't
cross-reference these with the district and I can't find the district on
a general map.

passengier lists & sharing a success #general

Rakoff125

friends,
I just discovered a site that sells original passenger lists; none of my ships
are on it but someone of you may get lucky so check-
http://www.oceanliner.com/passlist.htm
Might I add, If any one purchases one can you make the lists available through
Jewish Gen?
I have no financial interest and get no benefit >from sharing this information.

As a separate issue-this community really works! I have found major "limbs"
on my family tree that I never knew existed and have met and connected with
several families, including a wonderful 88 year old 5th cousin who remembers
my grandparents wedding and had lots of information to share. The bigger irony
is he was being admitted to a hospital 2 miles >from my house, where his
daughter worked! This is indeed a small world after all.

Jeremy is of course (as any dictionary\encyclopedia\book will
tell you) the short version for Jeremias = the english version
of the prophet Yirmiahu.

SMIEDT #lithuania

Heastern <heastern@...>

Anyone out there know the origins of the surname SMIEDT ?

Anyone got any connections to SMIEDT (Originally >from the areas Plunjan
and Neustadt ? )

My paternal great (SMIEDT ) grandfather left Lithuania , via Bremen
onto England, and finally settling in South Africa around 1875.
Most of his siblings followed to South Africa, some years later,
but there were 2 brothers that apparently went to the USA at the turn
of this century, and before my time, contact was lost with them.

By a slim chance, are there any fellow LitvakSIGers , with any possible
connections ?

English versions of Hebrew names #lithuania

Morris Stillman <stillmm@...>

There is no CERTAIN connection between English & Hebrew names unless a
direct translation was made by the parents. My wife & I believe that the
English & Hebrew names should be EXACTLY the same, but in the case of our
daughter we named her Rebecca Amy in English, and Batya Ahuva in Hebrew -
because my grandmother (Basha Liebe) was known as "Becky" in English.

A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF PARENTS NAMED THEIR CHILDREN THE HEBREW NAME OF THEIR
PARENT (or whoever they wanted to honor) AND THEN PICKED AN ENGLISH NAME
STARTING WITH A LETTER THAT HAD THE SAME SOUND OF THE FIRST LETTER OF THE
HEBREW NAME (in many cases because they wanted a name that sounded more
modern - or less Jewish - or more American, English or Spanish etc.).

I know many people named Moshe whose English names are Murray, Max, Marc,
Morris, Manfred, Maurice, Morton, Michael, Mark, etc. - but there is NO
CONNECTION between these names and their Hebrew names.

My eldest son is James Lawrence, his Hebrew name is Judah Leib.
Jim was named for his grandfather Judah Leib a.k.a. Julius Leon. Our
intention was to use the Hebrew name and just use the same initials for our
son's given and middle name.
