Re: Name changes not in US ports #belarus

I would like to thank all those kind people who replied to my posting.
However, my question was not about whether or not immigration officials at
Ellis Island or any other US port changed names of immigrants.

What I wish to know is: is anyone aware of the existence of authoritative
evidence regarding the question of name changes by immigration officials at
ports in countries other than the US, and particularly Canada and Great
Britain. US rules and procedures simply did not apply.

Evidence in this context means either first hand evidence (not family
stories) of the immigration experience or rules in force at the time. I'm
afraid that anything else is speculation.

Sincerely,

Roberta Sheps

I had a neighbor here in Palo Alto who claimed that his grandfather
from Russia's surname was changed by an official at Ellis Island from
an unpronouncable five or six syllables ending in "ski" to "LEVINE."
Supposedly, his grandfather had tried to get the immigration official
to write it out, but only succeeded in angering the overworked
bureaucrat, who in a fit of frustration crossed out the long name,
and wrote LEVINE instead. When the immigrant was appalled and said
he was not a Levite, the official stamped the document and told him
not to hold up the line.
One wonders where all this crossing out and changing was done, considering there
WERE NO separate records kept at Ellis Island, the records there being the ships
manifests supplied by the steamship companies. Any crossing out that appears on
the manifests results >from someone intentionally or unintentionally missing the
boat. There does appear to have been some amplification done to the manifests,
however, in a different hand, and it is not clear where or when these additions
were made. Blank spaces are sometimes filled
(addresses of relatives especially, adding of brackets to show relationships to
parents and grandparents, etc.), but I challenge anyone to show any changes
whatsoever of primary information between the records kept at the ports of
embarkation and Ellis Island. This comparison is particularly easy to do with
ships that sailed >from Hamburg, where the records >from Hamburg are available for
a fee online. I have examined some of these in regard to my own researches and
even though they normally send a transcribed version, I have seen nothing worse
than the change of a single letter between Hamburg and New York. I repeat, if
major changes to names were done, they were done either after arriving in
America or before leaving the home country.

I have scaned a petition of Romanovsky colony colonists to Novorussia

bad harvest.

I do not know where Romanovsky colonists were from.

This document >from april 1843 contains list of all colonists families
heads with signatures.

This is unique document !!!
First census for colonies was in 1858, 15 years later and many
colonists dead this time because difficulties, so many of them not
listed in 1858 census.
You can see also original (!) signatures of your ancestors.

I asked archive people for permission to publish in the Web these

Later I'll publish such lists for Novo Berislav and Novo Poltavka.

Unfortunatly I have not time to translate the letter and to

Did not know Vladimir JABOTINSKY lived in Prague.
I don't think JABOTINSKY lived in Prague. He continually traveled
throughout Europe and visited my grandfather in my grandparents home
whenever he arrived in Prague. My mother remembered his visits and
particularly his remarks about Hitler "We are going to dance on his grave",
JABOTINSKY predicted. He also wrote numerous articles which were published
in my grandfather's publication Der Judenstaadt - urging the youth -
especially the youth- to leave for Palestine. One of the articles (1934 or
1935) urging people to leave referred to the tragedy of "our brothers in
Germany" and that the Czechoslovak Jews will be next.

Zionists and Revisionist congresses in Prague.
I would appreciate knowing the web site listing these congresses. There was
one photo in Der Judenstaadt taken at a Congress in Karlovy Vary (there may
be more) and I have an envelope with the first stamps of Masarik stamped
with black Jewish Stars (>from Carlsbad) in honor of the Congress (I have to
look up the year).

Alexander Ringer speculates that SCHOENBERG was influenced by JABOTINSKY.
Your grandfather was one of the greatest figures in 20th century music and
it seems an avid Zionist with an urgency to alert Jews and save lives. My
grandfather did the same throughout Czechoslovakia, before he left proudly
on the first Jewish ship, Tel Aviv, >from Trieste. As to his being
influenced by JABOTINSKY - you may want to research the Beit Jabotinsky
archives in Tel Aviv. They published many of JABOTINSKY'S letters and will
be publishing more over the next four to five years. I found an original
letter written by my grandfather Viktor KOHN to JABOTINSKY and JABOTINSKY'S
comments written on the original letter. There were several other letters
related to a Jewish Bank, Bank Heamel that my grandfather, a bank director
for 35 years in Prague, tried to establish in Palestine. There were some
complications with the establishment of this bank and there is a
correspondence between JABOTINSKY and others in relation to this bank (in
Russian). The archivist at Beit Jabotinsky said he spoke 15 languages.

My grandfather SCHOENBERG of course knew WERFEL.
Unfortunately I don't have any personal stories about WERFEL except that he
went to gymnasium with my grandfather and was a friend. Egon KISCH was in
the same class.

I am curious to hear more about MAX BROD.
Max BROAD was my grandfather's classmate and good friend in Prague as well
as in Tel Aviv. Since my grandfather Viktor KOHN was also Franz KAFKA'S
second cousin there was that connection as well. In Tel Aviv my late uncle
Walter Yehuda (KOHN) COHEN, chief of classical music broadcasting for Kol
Yisrael, wrote a book together with Max BROAD "Die Music Israels." My aunt
said that Max BROD was charming and that many women liked him very much
although he was not good looking. He used to come to my grandparent's home
on Friday nights for musical evenings.

I knew that Max BROD and Franz WERFEL were >from Prague, but did not know
that Vladimir JABOTINSKY lived there. Did he? I can see on the web that
there were Zionist and Revisionist congresses in Prague. 4th World
Conference of the Zionist Revisionists, Prague, 17 Aug. 1930. Eighteenth
Zionist Congress, Prague, 18 August 1933. Perhaps that is the connection.
I would love to know more. My grandfather Arnold SCHOENBERG was invited to
attend the Zionist congress in Prague in 1933 but could not go because of a
visa problem. At the time he was already in France, having fled Berlin in
May 1933, and had decided to dedicate himself to Jewish issues. Prof.
Alexander Ringer speculates that SCHOENBERG was influenced by JABOTINSKY,
because many of my grandfather's writings on Jewish affairs post-1933
express views similar to the revisionists. For example, "We don't have
time like the Zionists. The immigration of 14 million Jews at 50,000 per year
would take 280 years." And also in his prescient October 1938 essay "A
Four Point Program for Jewry" where he wrote:

500,000 Jews >from Germany, 300,000 >from Austria, 400,000 from
Czechoslovakia, 500,000 >from Hungary, 60,000 >from Italy - more than one
million and eight hundred thousand Jews will have to migrate in how short a
time, one does not know. May God provide there will not be an additional
3,500,000 >from Poland, 900,000 >from Rumania, 240,000 >from Lithuania and
100,000 >from Latvia-almost 5,000,000; and Yugoslavia with 64,000,
Bulgaria with 40,000 and Greece with 80,000 might follow at once, not
to speak of other countries, which are at present less active.
Is there room in the world for almost 7,000,000 people?
Are they condemned to doom? Will they become extinct? Famished?
Butchered?
Every keen and realistic observer should have known this beforehand, as
I knew it almost twenty years ago. Even one who does not overrate Jewish
intelligence in political affairs will admit that every Jew should have
known at least that the fate of the Austrian and Hungarian Jews was sealed
years ago. And can a man with foresight deny that the Jews of Rumania and
Poland are in danger of a similar fate.
What have our Jewish leaders, our Jewish men with foresight, done to
avert this disaster? What have they done to alleviate the sufferings of
the people already stricken by this mishap? What have they done to
find a place for the first 500,000 people who must migrate or die?

My grandfather SCHOENBERG of course knew WERFEL very well after he married
Alma MAHLER in 1929, and especially when the WERFELS came to live in Los
Angeles. My mother's parents -- Eric and Trude ZEISL -- also met and were
befriended by the WERFELS in Paris in 1939. The story of WERFEL's
rescue by Alma and escape >from France over the Pyrenees is incredible.
It led to WERFEL's "Song of Bernadette." Strangely, WERFEL seems best
known today in the Armenian community because of his 1933 novel Forty Days
of Musa Dagh about the Turkish massacre of Armenians.

Max BROD is the one we have to thank for the rescue and publication of most
of Franz KAFKA's works. BROD was KAFKA's executor and refused to follow
the instructions in KAFKA's will to burn all of the unpublished manuscripts.
BROD managed to bring the manuscripts to Palestine, and later prepared them
for publication, making KAFKA one of the most influential writers of the
last century. Incidentally, BROD also wrote music reviews including very
early favorable reviews of SCHOENBERG performances in Prague.

I would be curious to hear more about BROD, WERFEL and JABOTINSKY.

Please let me add one comment to Sharla's excellent summary.
Yes, a project coordinator is needed for every yizkor book project.
However, we do not need to develop each project as a fundraising
project. In fact, the Gold Bukowina project has been handled solely
as a volunteer effort. One person has contributed most of the
translations, and he selects the order of the chapters he wishes to
translate.

We will need the table of contents translated exactly as it appears
in the book so that we can link translated chapters to it. See
http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/Bukowinabook/bukowina.html as an
example. One volunteer scanned all the images in the book, and they
are accessible at
http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/Bukowinabook/buk2_800.html.

I mention these sites as examples only of how we might proceed and as
illustrations of the appearance of the presentation.

Sharla is indeed correct in mentioning that, sadly, we have been
unable to move ahead with the Moravia book because of the lack of
donations.

Hi
The last viewmate I sent I received no answers. This one is a
marriage registry, at least I need the headers. And it is
much smaller.

I added in my web some of the registries, I am working on putting
all of them, even if they are not translated.
This is page 320 of Prague marriage registry of year 1818.

Thanks
