Travel To Lithuania #general

Shuman, Carl H

This summer I will be traveling with my family to visit my daughter, who
will be studying in Prague. After a visit to Prague we will be flying to
Vilnius and staying there >from August 8 to August 13. My grandfather,
Abraham PAUL(PALL) was born in Anyksciai (Anixst), the son of Moshe Yom
Tov ben Shmuel PALL and Rachel BINDER. He was a rabbi. Thanks to
JewishGen I have been able to locate a number of records concerning my
greatgrandfather, my grandfather, and his siblings and I am hopeful that I
can do more research when I am in Vilnius. I have several questions for
the list serve.

1) I will be in need of someone who can act as a guide and who can drive
us >from Vilnius to Anyksciai and back. Are there reputable services or
individuals that list serve members have used when traveling to Lithuania
who they would be willing to recommend? We are a family of five.

2) When in Vilnius how do I go about doing original research in state
archives? Are there reliable services or individuals who can help me? I
am most interested in finding out more information about my
greatgrandmother, Rachel Binder, who was the first of my greatgrandmother's
three wives (he outlived them all and died in 1920). I am also interested
in finding out the names and any information available about his other two
wives, the second of whom was my beloved Great Aunt Sarah (nee Paul)
Gordon's mother. Aunt Sarah had a sister who apparently perished in the
Shoa and I have been trying in vain to find out more information about her
as well.

I am thinking of contacting the Vilnius Yiddish Institute as well to see if
they can help me. If anyone has other suggestions, they would be most
appreciated. Thank you.

Picard family #latinamerica

hernan picard <hernanpicard@...>

Hello, dear Jewishgen members:
I'm an Argentinian, descendant of a french citizen named, Sylvain Picard,
born in Mulhouse (Alsace) in 1863. In those days, Alsace was part of France,
but in 1870 the region was annexed to Germany. So when Sylvain (or Sylvin)
Picard had to do the military service, he run out the German Alsace to join
the Foreign Legion ("Légion Etrangère"). After many years passed in Panama
(the construction of the Canal) and in Chili, he finally stayed in Argentina
(Rio Gallegos city, Argentinian Patagonia), and three generations later, me,
I returned to France and begun searching information about the family roots.
After some information I have gathered, Picard, even if it is a usual french
name, is also a common Jewish name in the Jewish community in Alsace. Even
though, the Picard family, in Argentina, is Catholic. But it could obviously
be an adopted name. So I'm not certain about Sylvin Picard's religion. The
name, the country, and the city of origin suggest a jewish origin. Their
parents were named Henri Picard, and Pauline Rueff (or Ruff) . Rueff is also
a Jewish name.
All the information I have stops there. I have contacted the Jewish
community in Mulhouse, but with no results.
How could I get some information about Henri Picard and/or Pauline Rueff ?
All I know was written in the document when Sylvin was born: they were both
born in Mulhouse, and they had 30 and 28 years old (so I deduce, born in
1833 and 1835)
Mulhouse Archives do not accept requirements >from any particular; except in
case you have the exact names, dates and places.
I thank for every suggestion you could send me.

Thanks a lot. Hernàn Picard, Gentilly, France.

Austrian & Czech Refugees, 1940 - passenger lists to Boston #austria-czech

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

David Rosen, a member of the Immigrant Ships
Transcribers Guild, Boston has given me permission to
send details of his research to our group.

In 1940, two British passenger ships, the "Nova
Scotia" and the "Newfoundland" made eleven Atlantic
crossings >from Liverpool, carrying 1,052 passengers to
their Boston, Massachusetts destination.

Most of the passengers were Germans, Austrians,
Czechoslovakians and Poles fleeing >from the Nazis -
and 888 were registered as Jews.

David has contributed transcriptions of the full
passenger lists to the Immigrant Ships Transcribers
Guild <http://www.immigrantships.net>

They may be found in Volume 8 at:
http://immigrantships.net/v8/1900v8/1900indexv8.html

I was amazed at the amount of family data available on
these transcripts - I have already found many Viennese
refugees and their relatives.

Thank you David.

Peter Rohel <peterrohel@...>

Listing SCHWARZ among the other names was a mistake, as pointed out by Celia
Male. I do have other SCHWARZ names on my site.

As to our FRIEDMANN ancestors being known as FRIED by their descendants? I
have no idea, since we do not know any descendants with the FRIEDMANN or
FRIED names.

Best is to find out, if your FRIEDMANN or FRIED ancestors were in the
Textile trade (bef 1850-1946): Vienna, factory in Sternberg(k) Moravia &
possibly Szenitz, Hungary (now Senica, Slovakia) before that. For more
information see my web site below.

very similar to some in my husband's Vienna families. The difference is that
his relatives are all without the MANN ending on the surnames. Can you tell
me if these could be the same family, but the descendants only knew them by
the shorter version of the names? The time frames appear to be close to the
onces we will be working to extend. The other name in Vienna was GROSS.
