Austrian & Czech Refugees, 1940 - passenger lists to Boston #austria-czech

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

David Rosen, a member of the Immigrant Ships
Transcribers Guild, Boston has given me permission to
send details of his research to our group.

In 1940, two British passenger ships, the "Nova
Scotia" and the "Newfoundland" made eleven Atlantic
crossings >from Liverpool, carrying 1,052 passengers to
their Boston, Massachusetts destination.

Most of the passengers were Germans, Austrians,
Czechoslovakians and Poles fleeing >from the Nazis -
and 888 were registered as Jews.

David has contributed transcriptions of the full
passenger lists to the Immigrant Ships Transcribers
Guild <http://www.immigrantships.net>

They may be found in Volume 8 at:
http://immigrantships.net/v8/1900v8/1900indexv8.html

I was amazed at the amount of family data available on
these transcripts - I have already found many Viennese
refugees and their relatives.

Thank you David.

Re: FRIEDMANN, ADLER, DOMENY, MAYER, SAFFIR, SCHWARZ, SUBAK #austria-czech

Peter Rohel <peterrohel@...>

Listing SCHWARZ among the other names was a mistake, as pointed out by Celia
Male. I do have other SCHWARZ names on my site.

As to our FRIEDMANN ancestors being known as FRIED by their descendants? I
have no idea, since we do not know any descendants with the FRIEDMANN or
FRIED names.

Best is to find out, if your FRIEDMANN or FRIED ancestors were in the
Textile trade (bef 1850-1946): Vienna, factory in Sternberg(k) Moravia &
possibly Szenitz, Hungary (now Senica, Slovakia) before that. For more
information see my web site below.

Re Snip: The FRIEDMANN and SCHWARZ families mentioned on 26 and 27 April are
very similar to some in my husband's Vienna families. The difference is that
his relatives are all without the MANN ending on the surnames. Can you tell
me if these could be the same family, but the descendants only knew them by
the shorter version of the names? The time frames appear to be close to the
onces we will be working to extend. The other name in Vienna was GROSS.

Holocaust Memorial Day Siren in Cape Town #southafrica

I understand that the powers that be were advised of the fact that the siren
would be sounded prior to the event. One of the amazing things that ensued
was that the Parliament Sesiion all rose for a moment of silence when that
happened. Kol Hakavod to the organisers.

My grandfather originally came >from Pandelys, Lith. (in Yiddish,

I was wondering if there were others, besides me, that were researching

Bass from Vilna #lithuania

Sophie and Arthur Bass <abass@...>

My gfather Elias (Eliahu Meir) BASS, son of Velvel (Wolf Yitzhak) was said
to come >from Vilna. His father was said to have owned a large inn which
covered an entire block in Vilna. My gfather immigrated to America in 1906.
A 2nd cousin whose gparents remained in Vilna said that the inn still
existed. I met my cousin in Israel when we lived there.

I would appreciate any information on the inn and/or my ggparents. I have
looked through all the Litvak and Lithuanian databases and can find nothing
about the family.

Thank you.

While transcribing the burial records for Hills of
Eternity in Colma, CA, I came across the birth town of
a Lena KISKEL, b. ca. 1821. I can't make out the town
name, but it looks to me like "Schweisenz," Prussia.
I have posted a photo of the name on ViewMate, no.

I am sorry that the letters are blurred but hope
someone recognizes this town.
