My late husband had his Bar Mitzvah in Letchworth during the war. Because
of food rationing it was a very difficult task to get enough food together
to make a meal (even more difficult because it had to be a strictly kosher
meal) for all the guests and many people contributed coupons including Mrs.
Sassoon whom my mother-in-law came to know.

NAMES IN A 1930s LITHUANIAN PASSPORT #lithuania

Adam Yamey <adamandlopa@...>

I have a picture of a page in a Lithuanian passport,
dated about 1936.

One line reads:
"Vardas, tevo vardas : vidas, joselio".

Am I correct in thinking that 'vardas' means
parent(s), and 'tevo' has something to do with the
words 'teva' or 'tevai' meaning 'father' and
'parents', respectively?

Is the name Vidas, Lithuanian for David, by any
chance?

Take a Look at Friday's Conference Schedule #poland

Roni S. Liebowitz

Before you book that return plane ticket, or plan to hop on the train to
your summer home or to take off for the beach, please look at the
Conference's Friday morning schedule. We have some very exciting talks and
events planned that morning that you won't want to miss.

We have been blessed with over 260 presentations. Rather than keeping
everyone awake until midnight every night to attend them, we opted to
schedule a full morning of sessions on Friday, Aug. 18, >from 8:00 a.m. to
12:15 p.m.

If you're interested in Jews >from Lithuania, Ukraine, Hungary, Greece,
Transcarpathia, Scotland -- or New York...

If you'd like to gain exposure on the Internet, unearth deep dark secrets
about the criminals in your family's past, or find other "Jews in the
news"...

If you need advice on getting organized, publishing your research, or
conserving your photos and documents...

If you're searching for living relatives or trying to learn more about Shoah
victims or survivors...

If you hope to understand your "chochka" (or how a word comes to be spelled
that way)...

If you want to hear the story of a genealogist who became "suddenly
Jewish"...

...Friday has something for you. I suggest that you read about Friday's
sessions on the Conference web site

www.jgsny2006.org/conference_program.cfm

One of these programs requires some preparation. For "The Jewish Chochka and
Ephemera Road Show" (Session 408), Rafi Guber requests that registrants
bring family items, documents, photos, and ephemera to the conference. He
and a panel will help determine when and >from where the items originated and
any other secrets they may reveal about your family. Please remember to
bring along items for this exciting session.

Stay through the 18th and leave on a chai!

EARLY REGISTRATION MUST BE SUBMITTED BY MAY 15, 2006 !!!

SASS or ZWEIG families from Podvolochisk. #poland

Guy Gurfinkel <guygurfinkel@...>

Does somebody have information about SASS family or ZWEIG family from
Podvolochisk?

My grandfather, Michael SASS, escaped >from there when the nazis got
closer, and all of his family were probably killed. His father's name is
Moshe ZWEIG, and his mother's name is Bina SASS. He had a brother,
Velvle (Wolf), and a sister, Perl (Hanna).

As far as I know, Podvolochisk was once a part of Poland,
but today it's a part of Ukraine.

PURINSON search in Pennsylvania and New Jersey #general

Rochelle Gershenow

I am trying to find a connection between a family line of mine and a
PURINSON family who lived in Philadelphia after emigrating >from Ukraine.
There are two descendants, in particular, whom I wish to contact. They are
Stephen Purinson and Mark Purinson who are in their 60s. Mark had a daughter
Lisa Marie Purinson. Stephen and Mark lived at one time in south
Philadelphia on 6th St. and on Mercy St respectively. The address and phone
numbers for them that I have found via Internet searches--FindUSA, Yahoo
People Finder, Ultimate White Pages, Zabasearch, etc. are not current, and I
can find no other listing for them. I asked the cemetery where Mark's
parents are buried if they would forward a letter >from me to him and I was
told that this is something they will not do. I believe Mark still lives in
Pennsylvania. If anyone knows of these people, please contact me.

Monica Leonards #austria-czech

Phillip Lederer <lederer@...>

I met Monica at the Toronto Conference. Like most of us Bohemians,
we speculated on possible multiple connections through common names
and places such the dorf of Krinek where we both had g grandparents.
I was in slight awe considering her connection to the MAHLER family.
It was wonderful for me to meet her and the other attending
correspondents >from this group that I knew only >from the limited
perspective of this newsgroup. I have found that many of us share so
much in family backgrounds and family history, wandering >from Bohemia
to Vienna and then, somehow, to safer shores.

I found Monica to be smart, knowledgeable, warm, articulate and
sensible. I recall she talked quickly and had a lot to say that I
found terrifically interesting. It was a great pleasure getting to
know her a bit. I long ago planned to team up with her on Krinek but
never got around to it.

It is a shock that such as young, attractive and vital person has
left us. I will write to her family to express my sadness at this
great loss.

Eric Hoffer (1902-1983),who wrote The True Believer, may have been of
German Jewish origin (Wikipedia proposes this) but is also mentioned in
other sources as "non-Jewish". Britannica does not comment. Does anyone
on JewishGen know whether he had Jewish parentage or ancestry? Thanks.
