Dear People,

In message #23 of November 2, 1999, Jerry Segal asked about
"Sebezhsky," possible a border city. He said his grandmother's visa was
issued in Riga, Latvia.

I did not find a "Sebezhsky" in my gazetteer but I did find a
"Sebezh." In 1926 it was was a town of 5,753. It is located in the
southwest portion of Velikiye Luki oblast of the Soviet Union, 75 miles
west of Velikiye Luki near the Latvian border. It was noted for flax
procession and brewing. It was charted in 1535 under Lithuania, held
briefly by Muscovy during the 17th century, and in 1771 it passed >from
Poland to Russia.

In his "Shtetl Finder" Chester G.Cohen says Sebez or Sebezh is
northeast of Dvinsk and Vilna.

New York Times reporter Clyde Haberman wrote an article about the 19th
Annual Conference on Jewish Genealogy during the Conference. In it, he
mentions seeing a message posted on the bulletin board outside the
Hospitality Room which said, "Anyone know the Rozanski family and
Koslowski >from Bialystok?"

This article was read by a gentleman in South Africa who wrote to the JGS
(NY) in behalf of the Rozanski family and would like to make contact with
the person who wrote the note. Would the mystery writer please get in
touch with me?

Seek someone researching the descendants of Rabbi Hayyim Volozhiner to
determine if he was my 3X Gr Grandfather. Hayyim Volozhiner, 1749-1821,
was the son of Rabbi Yitzchok (Isaac) andhad a son Rabbi Yitzchok who died
in 1849. My 2X Gr Grandfather was Rabbi Yitzchok Rabinowitch who was born
in 1801 and was the son of my 3X Gr Grandfather Rabbi Chaim. My Yitzchok
was married to the daughter (possibly Leah) of Rabbi David the Rabbi of
Novogrudok and later to a Sheine Rochel born 1817. My Yitzchok had sons in
Novogrudok Rabbis Schmuel & Avrom Rabinowitch born 1820 & 1823 both of
whom did not hold rabbinic positions. my Gr Grandfather Schmuel was known
as 'Schmuel dem Rovs auf der Rovs mishpocha'.My Yitzchok compiled the
writings of his father-in-law Rabbi David in boo=k Galya Massekta
published Vilna 1844 wherein he described his father Chaim=as Ha Rav,
leader, master, teacher & goan. Without proof family claimed relationship
to the Rav Soloveichik.

at around 00.30 am on November 19, 1939. I am told the London "Times"
index has the following entry:

Could anyone look this up for me, please? Or, on the same dates, in the
Daily Telegraph (I remember seeing the story there at the time).

I am especially interested in
1. the passenger and casualty lists,
2. a human interest story on an orphaned Jewish boy--he may have been
a survivor but I thinks he had already been in England for a few months
(Kindertransport? High Wycombe?)

I do not even recall the name of the family but will certainly recall it
when I see the list. This would be the only way I can figure out just how
these relatives were related to us, where they lived, and whose children
they were.

Name DINEVICH on Russian Passport #general

A Russian passport was recently found in the home of a cousin. It was
issued in Odessa in March 1913. The name as translated appears to be
Cyrie Atperova DINEVICH. The name also appears in German and appears to
be spelled Cyrel Di'nevitsch. None of the family recognizes the name
although the dates are about right for my grandfather Nathan Litvak's
departure >from Hamburg, Germany. My Russian friend indicated that
DINEVICH was the father's name. Is DINEVICH a patronymic? If so what
would the father's name be?

Route from Ekaterinopol, Ukraine to Libau, Latvia #general

A hand written itinerary of the route my family traveled >from Ekaterinopol
(Katerinopol) to the ship in Libau, Latvia in 1923 was recently discovered
by a relative in a desk drawer. It was written in Russian which I had
translated. Maybe it will help some others and then I have some questions.

22 June Arrived Riga (This is where they obtained their passport)

Questions:
Why follow this route instead of going to Odessa to sail? What would have
been the mode of transportation? It appears by the dates that some of it
had to be by train. Was there a place for Jewish Emigrants to stay while
waiting for the ship in Libau?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I notice that every now and again people are seekink information regarding
Jewish Soldiers who served in the Red Army And various other Armies
affiliated to it

During the years of searching for my wife Pnina's identity I accumulated
the names and addresses of Archives and Organizations dealing with the
subject. As a result of our writting to the Russian Red Cross, seeking
information about Pnina's Father they found her brother who still lives in
Russia. He and his wife have since visited with us, at our home, here in
