South African Friends of Beth Hatefutsoth capture the rich history of South
Africa's Jewish Communities

(IsraelWire-2/17) The South African Friends of Beth Hatefutsoth have created
a new Web site, providing information about their Country Communities
Research Project launched in 1992.

The Jews of South Africa have had a vibrant and rich relationship with the
country communities. Migration has changed the Jewish landscape; Jewish
presence in many of the smaller communities has been radically reduced or
non-existent.

Under the auspices of the South African Friends of Beth Hatefutsoth,
researchers and experts are compiling data >from 975 towns in South Africa
with some Jewish presence.

The documenting of the Jewish Communities of South Africa is being
researched for Beth Hatefutsoth. The information will be incorporated into a
multimedia program and will be displayed on terminals at the Diaspora Museum
in Israel and at the Jewish Museum in Cape Town. http://www.sabh.org/

KHRAPUN-A name and a shetel #general

,

I know that the original name of my father's family in Lithuania was
Khrapun and that family members were still using it in 1895. According
to the Dictionary of Russian names its derivation was >from Belarus.
I have just discovered that there was a shetel in Belarus by the same
name. Does anyone have any suggestions as how to proceed >from here.
I've contacted 2 people on the JGFF. Any other ideas would be greatly
appreciated.

Lots of addresses/lots of envelopes; Software help? #general

Michael Horowitz <mhorowit@...>

Folks -

As much as I prefer a more precise approach, I'm considering
mailing all 91 Rudinskys I've found in the telephone CD. They will
dump all the Rudinskys to a floppy for me, but it is up to me to
get those addresses (and my return address) on an envelope. I'd
prefer not using labels as (at least for me) labels are a visual
clue that I'm getting advertisement.

Can anyone recommend a software program which will use a file
of names and addresses as input and will print my return address
and the addressees name/address on an envelope?

Mike

Great Jewish Cities of Central & Eastern Europe #general

Rakoff125

I have no interest in this product. I just got this book out of the
library and it is loaded with good information on Prague, Warsaw, Cracow
and Budapest including some Rabbinic family history, notable Jewish
community members, Synagogue information, cemetary details for notable
residents, tour and traveler information and extensive history of the Jews
for each city. I highly recommend it to travelers or researchers with
connections to any of these cities. It is an excellent book.

especially >from 1920. I am particularly interested in any holdings outside
the UK. They may be on Microfilm or bound. I look forward to your help and

GIEN #general

Van Der Merwe Fam. <tandel@...>

I would like to find out about my "Roots". Does anyone have information on
the surname "GIEN" or people of that surname.
Regards,
Paul van der Merwe, Perth, Western Australia

MODERATOR NOTE: For beginning Genealogists with Jewish roots, JewishGen
is the place to start. Just go to the JewishGen homepage at
http://www.jewishgen.org and start with the "Learn" category. Read the
JewishGen FAQ, a great resource for beginners and search through the
Infofiles for subjects of interest. Also, all those searching their
Jewish roots should enter their surnames and ancestral towns in the
JewishGen Family Finder, which is also accessible >from the homepage.
There you will find three people searching GIEN.

UK Index of Naturalisation Records at Kew #general

Peter_Hills <Peter_Hills@...>

I am planning to visit the Public Record Office at Kew in the next week
or so and would be happy to do a quick check of the UK Naturalisation
Records Index of names for any specific entries.

I need first name, likely UK town of residence and approximate dates
(all optional) and surname (essential!). The index will show whether there
is a Home Office file at Kew which normally gives full family history
including copies of local police reports about the applicant.
