Can someone do a Los Angeles (Reseda, CA) obit look-up for me?A Librarian
told me to look into the Daily News publication (that covers the Mid-Valley).
One death occured in January, 1984; the other in April, 1987. The deceased
were listed in a recently translated Yiddish letter and it is hoped that
survivors listed will bring forth another generation of relatives. Contact
Arlene Rich at BR1595 if you can help. Many thanks.

Re: taking pictures at Waldheim? #general

Myra S. Davis <myrabokpg@...>

Dear Genners >from Chicago Area:
Could some kind soul take four pictures for me at Waldheim Cemetery,
SILVERMAN and WEISS section?
I contacted them and they want $10 per polaroid picture which I think is
quite high.
This is for my great uncle Morris GRANOFSKY, Rebecca and Sophie his first
and second wife and Annette GRANT BROWN, Morris's daughter.
The site is: Gate 220, Sophie is grave 2, Rebecca grave 5, Morris
grave 6, Annette is grave 4. I need to find out their father's names
which would be inscribed on the headstone.
I really don't need Annette's since I know Morris and Rebecca were her
parents, unless there is a picture of her on her headstone, so just the
first three pictures would be fine.

If Sara Fraiman-Bavly >from Edmonton, Alberta Canada reads this please
contact me. I have lost your email.

Looking for: GRANOFSKY, ZELINKA >from Skvara, Ukraine,
MOTANKY/MATANKY >from Povaloch, Ukranine. SPECTOR >from Skvira or
Pavoloch, KLIGERMAN >from Pavaloch.

SPEILGLASS #general

Alfred A. Goldberg <alfran@...>

For a cousin, I am seeking any info about a SPEILGLASS family. She
thinks that the family originated in Romania, with the name of SPEIL
(since his occupation pertained to glass, they believe that glass was
attached to his name) They then migrated to France. This must have
been in the very late 1800's. They then came to the USA in the very
early 1900's. The ones who stayed in France supposedly owned a rather
large Department Store.

Miriam (Minnie) Speilglass married Hyam or Chaim ORNSTEIN, and they had
7 children. The children's names were Sigmund, Sam, Harry, Anna, Lena,
Rose, and Jack. We know that Harry was born in America.

I have looked in "Family Finder" and can't find any references.

Any thoughts on following this up?

Thanks for any help.

This was not a practice exclusive to "shtel" Jews. It has always been
our custom, and continues today. Not only is it common practice to add
an extra name when one is praying for a refuah shelama (speedy recovery),
but when naming a child for someone who was deceased at an earlier age
then is typical (which of course, would be relative to when and where
we're talking about), a name such a Chaim, Chaya or Raphael is usually
added as well. These customs are probably more exclusive to Ashkenakic
Jews, since Sephardim often name children for living relatives.

Andi Alpert Ziegelman asked:

1. Might Habad hasids have a habit of naming unrelated children after
famous hasids, of which Shneur Zalman and Menahem Mendel were two?
...snip....
---------
Yes. I have Lubavich (i.e. Habad) relatives. There are many young people
named Menakhem Mendel because of Menakhem Mendel Shneerson, the most
recent Lubavich rebbe.

The ancestors you wrote about could have been named after the rebbes of
their own time, or earlier rebbes, or after ancestors who were themselves
named after rebbes. It is most likely, I would guess, for people to be
named after the then-current rebbe, so you can compare the approximate
birth year of each ancestor with who was then the rebbe.

Mollie LEVY's NY Birth Certificate #general

I've established that Mollie LEVY was born in the state of New York on
November 4,1891.

I have no idea what city she was born in. I only know that her parents
were Sam LEVY and the former Betty (nicknamed Bailey) ISAACS.

Where can I obtain Mollie's birth certificate without knowing the city
of her birth?
