Hebrew name equivalents #general

Foodphile@...

While we all realize that there are no set equivalents to Hebrew names,
it can be very helpful to know the original names of other peoples
ancestors, and the names they wound up using. Thanks to the kind people
who emailed me, I now know that my great aunt Ida might have been Chaya
or Yehudis (Yehudith, Yudith) before emigrating. This will make searching
Passenger Arrival films far less tedious.

Bell and Howell Model RP407E Microfilm Reader/Printer #general

Stanley Diamond

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Montreal is currently undertaking
a major indexing project of vital records for which we have acquired --
on loan -- a Bell and Howell Model RP407E Microfilm Reader/Printer
(ca. 1973).

Unfortunately, we need a higher magnification lens than came with the
equipment (x11). I have tried Bell and Howell and every re-seller of
used equipment I could find. I also posted on the Archives mailing
list. No luck!

If you can help or know where we may be able to find a lens, please
contact me privately.

Russian Poland - exactly where is it. #general

Rica Goldberg

Re the letter on the Digest, dated 13 April 2000.

So where exactly is Russsian Poland, as I have that too as the name of the
country one set of my great-grandparents are purported to have come from??

MODERATOR NOTE: In the JewishGen InfoFiles, there are a number
of files under the heading "Russian Empire" which can be found
at <http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/#Russia>. The excellent
"EEFAQ - Jewish Genealogical Research in Eastern Europe" by
Warren Blatt has the answer to this question, and much more
information that will be useful.

Gross Glogau, Silesia #general

SOL2516171@...

I am interested in getting any suggestions about tracing my ancetors who
lived in Gross Glogau, Silesia in the 17th and early 18th centuries.

My eight times great grandfather Benjamin (Seev) Wolf, son of Baruch son
of Abraham, was a cantor in Gross Glogau around the mid to late 17th
century/early 18th century. I believe he married a daughter of Israel
Teomim of Glogau. (Israel Tomim died in Zolkiew in 1705.) Benjamin
(Seev) Wolf's son Elkana was my seven times great grandfather. He was
born in Gross Glogau, eventually lived in Naumburg and then moved to
Fuerth, where he took the name Naumburg as his surname. He died in Fuerth
in 1746. Elkana's wife was Rebekka Sara and she died in 1722, probably in
Fuerth.

Any information or suggestions of sources or people to pursue would be
greatly appreciated.

Could it be short for Zevulun, I wonder? Zevulun was one of the sons of
