Sometimes, but not always.

Yossi could also be a name on its own.

Yoshi could also be a diminutive for Joshua, Yeshayahu or
similar.

Hello

Yossi is Joseph or Yossef in Hebrew, Yoshi can be the same or be

Yes, there is a name, Fegel, and it means little bird, it is my middle
name, and I beleive it is adiminuitive of Faiga.

Wolf Is it a jewish name? #general

cbarony <keith@...>

Hi, I am an English Christian Church of England, married to a German
Catholic. Her family are very reticent to talk about the past and
especially the war. Her mothers maiden name was Wolf with an umlaut.
She has recently been told this is a German Jewish name could anybody
confirm this. If I have offended anybody with this question it is not
intentional just curiosity.
Thank you.

Mogilev Archives #general

David Goldman <davic@...>

I thought Jewishgenners would be interested to know that it appears that
the city of Mogilev, Belarus has has two archives: an archives of vital
records , the so-called ZAGS archives, and the archives of document
related to organizations in the territory of an oblast. At present in
Mogilev the first stores records since 1925, and the second since 1917.
Vital records before 1925, and documents before 1917 were earlier
transferred to National Historical Archives of Belarus in Minsk.
Concerning the Mogilev archives. In 1941 they were destroyed, and 90 percent
of the documents were lost. According to the rules currently in force, all
documents are preserved in local archives for only 75 years, and after
that are transferred to Minsk.

I received this information >from a person in Mogilev who is acquainted with
local conditions.

Getting documents from Polish archives #general

Daniel Kazez <dkazez@...>

Last year, it took me 5 months of waiting, $70, and several
telephone calls to get two simple documents >from Poland--and
this only because I had complete dates and correct names. And
after all that, I only received incomplete summaries of the two
records!

Over the years, I have failed to find an efficient
system for checking archives in Poland. Recently, I tried a
service that promised good results. I am pleased to report
that I actually got good results--a thorough check of specific
years for specific cities. If anyone needs to get
birth/marriage/death records >from Polish archives, I would be
glad to share my experience. (And the usual disclaimer:
I have no financial stake in this company! Then again, I
have no financial stake in any company!)

Documents that I have received have tied up a dozen loose
ends on my Englander family, added a new generation, provided
the names of my great great grandparents and my gr gr gr
grandparents, and added the names of great great aunts and
uncles I never knew I had. It's been quite an explosive
development in my family research!

"Samuel" in Hebrew #general

Peter Blood <nowy@...>

My family has a habit of anglicizing their names which confuses me to no
end. For instance my great grandparents Yitzik Mendel and Sura Rifka
DAMESEK were only known to their own son as "Max" and "Becky." My
grandfather told me that these were their names and I believed that to
be so for 20 years.

Anyways, I found a new record whereby my great grandfather Yitzik, while
he was living in America, records the names of his parents, who never
left Russia, as "Samuel" DAMESEK and "Esther" LEVINE. Now before I begin
searching on those names, am I correct that these are not Hebrew and in
Russia would be recorded as something completely different? What?
