Exciting news, indeed! However, it does bring to mind two questions.

Question 1. In 1998 I wrote to the Lietuvos Centrinis Metriku Archyvas
(LCMA) requesting several vital records of events that occurred in the
city of Vilnius between 1915 and 1930. I received a response >from the
Lithuanian Consulate in Chicago that enclosed one "hit" and several
negative results.

In addition, the letter >from Chicago suggested that I contact the
Lietuvos Valstybes Istorijos Archyvas (LVIA) about two of the records I
had requested and provided information including the exact year and
record number, data which I had NOT given them.

I then wrote to the LVIA and did receive the records >from them. How did
the LCMA and/or Chicago know this about the holdings in the LVIA?

Question 2. I have read previously that 1915 is the approximate dividing
year between the holdings of the LVIA and the LCMA. It now appears that
records as late as 1923 (see above) have been found at the LVIA. Must we
now expect that records of events occurring between 1915 and 1923 might
be found in either place?

MAIARA = witch in Hebrew? #general

peter lake <swage@...>

I have been told by several language scholars that my family's surname,
Maiara, means "witch" in Hebrew, Old French and the Sicilian dialect.
Can anyone tell me more about this?

My family immigrated >from Italy between 1840-1880 to NYC, USA. Does
anyone have any experience researching this name?

REFFKIN / RIFFKIN / RIWKIN ! #general

vzelvin@...

Just to share a great hit in the new "Index of 1890 NY Immigrants
from Austria, Poland, and Galicia". Using the D-M Soundex I ran
through my family names of REFFKIN / RIFFKIN. There they were spelled
RIWKIN. The whole family - parents and children. Without the soundex
they would never have been found using this RIWKIN spelling.
They emigrated on the Normannia and arrived in NY on August 22, 1890.
WOW.

Having already contributed my REFFKIN family genealogy to the Rhode
Island Jewish Historical Associaation, a cousin asked for the info
to attach to the genealogy at the RIJHA.

This is my gr grandmother's sister's family. They all went to live in
Providence, RI. where my gr grandparents SHUSHANSKY / SUSHANSKY had
already settled there in 1886, as well as my gr grandfather's sister's
family OLCH /OLCHINETSKY. On the other side of the REFFKIN family
were COHON and PASTER. They all knew each other.

My grandmother had a cousin Rudolph FEIMAN(FURMAN). He was a theatrical
agent in New York City. One of the people he managed was Jan Murray. His
wife's name was Bessie and they had 2 sons Harold and Jack. I believe they
had lived in Brooklyn.
If this rings a bell with anyone please email me.

Thanks

Could someone please point me to a site where I can find a
shareware Jewish calender for use with Win98. The JGEN site
for such programmes defaults to
another site that seems to have nothing to do with calenders.

Is this a scam or what? #general

Tom Venetianer <tom.vene@...>

Dear JewishGenners,

This is totally out of our subject, but maybe some of you can help me
with what follows. Please reply in private.

With certain frequency, I have been receiving letters >from total
strangers, asking me to write them about my WWII experience
(persecution, deportation, concentration camp experience, etc.)
Usually these people claim that they are doing some kind of a school
assignment or research. I refer them to the Washington Holocaust
Memorial Museum. After all, this is a very personal issue and
certainly not something to share with totally unknown individuals.

Now to my question: Is this a scam or some weirdos willing to "enjoy"
other people's suffering stories? Have any of you received similar
letters? If positive, how have you handled it?

Many thanks in advance for your time and reply
Tom
