Hi, all.
With the advent of municipalities publishing their vital records online
(see my recent referral to the California Birth and Death Indexes), and the
ease with which private companies can purchase lists of our "private"
information, I think the honest ultimate solution will be for those
institutions to use another validator. I have already seen this begin to
happen - they ask me for an answer of my own choosing, and then ask me
which question they should ask. Both are logged in their files.

Until then, our only option is to give them a word other than our mother's
maiden name, when we initially set up the account, etc. I have
inadvertently done this my entire life - according to the new Calif. Index,
the "maiden name" I've been using is not the one on my birth
certificate.... There is nothing to prevent us >from using our
grandmother's maiden name, or our second cousin's married name <g>, or as
another poster sugggested, a made-up word.

And individually, since the criminals also require a SSN to activate their
criminal plots, we can be more protective about our SSN than we currently
may be, not using it for drivers' license numbers, etc.

Government will always lag behind the criminals in protective legislation,
so we must take as much individual responsibility as we have available,
without creating fortresses. (And I'll get off my soapbox now <g>.)

I am seeking a family MARCUS, who lived at 128 Denniston Avenue,
Pittsburgh, PA 15217.
The relative I know of had the first name LOTTE. She came >from Berlin
originally. They probably lived here in the 40's and 50's and maybe later,
but I do not know for sure.

Anyone who might know of this family or the whereabouts of any descendents
would they please contact me privately.

from what I can tell, this street address no longer exists, although the
road itself seems to.

Thanks for any help.

I made a mistake when citing "The Club" by Stephen Brook as a book about
the American German-Jewish community. The title I meant to give was "Our
Crowd" by Stephen Birmingham. Stephen Brook's book is about British Jews.
Just an odd coincidence that there are two rather similar books by authors
with the same first name and last names both beginning with B.

For reasons of security and privacy, when I submit genealogical data to
public sites such as FTJP I first remove all living relatives and their
parents whether living or dead. This means in general that no one can
connect to my data unless he/she is searching for names of the generation
of the grandparents of living persons. I do not think this will seriously
prevent connections to be discovered.

In doing my WOLINSKY research, I keep hearing a family story about one
Avram WOLINSKY, who emigrated >from Alexandria, Egypt to America with his
mother Sara (Sorka) WOLINSKY (no marriage) and his wife Fanya around
1924, and under the same name or a changed name was reputed to have been
a big shot at Republic Pictures. I've researched the studio, but found
no similar name. Avram had three children: Roberte, who died young;
Annie WOLINSKY; and Jean or Joan COHN. The other story is that this same
Joan COHN was married to Harry COHN, Harry KARL, and Laurence HARVEY -
but when I researched this woman (who acted under the name Joan PERRY) I
found her background to be entirely different - Elizabeth Rosalind
MILLER, born 1911 in Pensacola, Florida.

Are there any Hollywood old-timers out there who could shed some light?

Best, Steve ORLEN

Of course all these differences have long since largely faded away, and
seem pretty silly to us today, but they where real in the late 19th and
earier part of the 20th century.
Not entirely. My parents told me a story that when they escaped >from Vienna
in 1939 and spent some time in a refugee camp in the south of england
(Kitchener camp), there was tension between the Jews of Austrian origin and
Jews of German origin. Even thrown together in joint misery, these
differences remained. The story my Mother told me went on that when new
refugees were allocated to a room of Austrian Jews, the people already
there would asked them to say a certain word, which I can't recall. >from
the way the newcomers pronounced it, they were classified as Austrian Jews
and welcomed, or German Jews and asked to move to another room.
