Copy Typing for Courland? #courland #latvia

CWhippman@...

Dear All,
We are trying to process material for the Courland website and we have some
particularly interesting material that needs typing into a Word file. This
includes reports >from the US consulate in Riga early in the War on the state of
the Jews. We have been experimenting with PDF but the files are too large
for many to be able to enjoy them. Would any of you be prepared to volunteer
to do some straight, not too difficult copytyping for Courland in order that
this material can be shared? 2 or 3 volunteers would be ideal.
Thanks for any offers. We will send the original material by pdf file
attachment. We can explain fully so don't be put off by the
technology.
Thanks again.
Best regards.

Another town #galicia

Max Heffler

I received a copy of my grandfather's (Mendel/Manuel/Mike Heffler)
naturalization which listed Kobylowloki (Trembowla/Budzanow/Janow) as his
town of birth. I have located his brother's naturalization but the copy is
not good. I am sure it lists a different town in Galicia and would
appreciate other eyes on this to see if someone might recognize it >from the
poor gifs I have. The two URLs are:

....I would suggest if you are going to continue researching get
current maps, and 19th century maps of the area. You can always use
Mapquest through Jewishgen when you enter the city you are searching, you
will be able to get the coordinates. Punch those in and out comes a map.

Re: Searching for place of birth - Name STAMMER - from Glacicia #galicia

NFatouros@...

In his message of August 13,2000, Peter Oppenhaim said he could not find
information about Szczersec, his grandfather's birthplace.

I believe there are two towns with this name, but the one I am interested
in-because my father was born there-was very near Lemberg, or what is now
called "Lviv" or "Lvov."

This Szczerzec has been called Shcherets, (and various spelling of this
name), for some time. Mr. Oppenheim can find information and a little
history about Shcherets at the Jewishgen-affiliated Cemetery Project. In one
of the issues of Avotaynu Ruth Rosenbloom wrote an article about her visit to
the Ukraine which included a brief stop at Shcherets.

Also a little more about this town can be found by doing a "Shcherets"
search using the google search engine, and finding a site by a Dr. Gary
Bergthold, who is of Mennonite heritage, and who visited Shcherets during a
visit he made to educate Ukrainian doctors.

There is no Yizkor book about Shcherets, but it may be mentioned or described
in some Yizkor or other book. In one of her books, Miriam Weiner says there
are some records available for Shcherets.

I invite Mr. Oppenheim to write to me for more specific information which I
can't give here and now because my back is bothering me rather intensely and
I can't be as thorough or exacting in my reply as I would like to be. There
are a couple or so Jewishgenners who are also interested in Shcherets. Mr.
Oppenheim can find them through Jewishgen's "Family Finder" or in its
Discussion Group Archives.
