Yes.

And I suppose that we are talking since the time of Abraham.
Not since Abraham, but perhaps since Moses. I think it's reasonably
certain that the hereditary status of Cohanim and Leviim was
well-established in First Temple times, i.e. before 586 BCE. You may
get some debate on how far before that.

Michael Trapunsky <mtrap@...>

Hi all,

I hope it's all right if I post this here, but I just wanted to let
everyone know that my wife, Faige, gave birth to our first child this
morning. A healthy baby boy. Mother and baby are doing well. I'm just
exhausted.

Re: OBERALTSTADTconcentration camp #general

Willie Glaser <velvel@...>

Forced labour and concentration camp OBERALTSTADT was a satellite camp of
KZ Gross-Rosen.
It was a "Zwangsarbeiter" forced labour camp for women, Type of work was
in linnen mills. The camp was located in the former Sudetenland,
Chechoslovakia.

Advice Needed on Obtaining Naturalization Record #general

Marc D. Hodies <marcandsher@...>

I have a grandfather who PA (Papers Applied) in 1907. I can only guess
where he lived at that time, either Manhattan or Brooklyn. I know where
he lived in 1920 but he was married then and I doubt that location has any
relevance.

So my gut instinct is to request a copy of his Naturalization Records from
the INS in D.C. I understand that this request is time-consuming since
there are 2000 other requests ahead of me in the queue. I do not mind
waiting but at the same time...is there an easier and faster way to get a
copy of his naturalization records. I do not live near NYC.

Any advice would be appreciated,

Marc Hodies

Nysen and Shmuel #general

Sherri Goldberg <sherrigoldberg@...>

Hello everyone! Thanks to my cousin Harriet Brown's
efforts, I finally have my great-uncle's birth record.
The record, however, has brought forth a mystery. My
great-grandfather was Shmuel INWENTARZ and he married
Frajda KRANC. Their eldest child was my great-uncle
Velvel (W'olf) who was born in 1895. The mystery is
that the birth record lists my great-grandfather's
name as Nysen.

My questions are this:
1. Was it common for men to have a first name and a
middle name back then in Poland?
2. Is Shmuel a nickname for Nysen or vice-versa?
3. Does the name Shmuel when written in Polish
resemble the name Nysen?

My grandfather has always referred to his father as
being named Shmuel and to his knowledge, his father
was never known as Nysen.

I appreciate any help any of you can give me and
thanks in advance!
