Shalom Monty,
I am on the Keidan Mailing List and therefore see a lot of your postings,
but I am not all that active there.
Anyway why Im writing to you is that Lew Goldfarb cc'd an email to me about
Jacob Goldfarb.
I am distantly related to Rochel-Leah nee Zlotnick Goldfarb, who apparently
was the second wife of Josel Ytzhak Goldfarb. The Vilna Archives show that
she had three sons, Chaim, Chonel and Orel.
My problem is that my mom (Living in South Africa - 94 years old) remembers
clearly!!
In the late 1950's, she visited Rochel-Leahs son Jacob in Argantine. From
This Jacob, Iv managed to locate family in Israel!!!
So besides my mom, I cannot link Jacob as a son to Rochel-Leah. MAYBE he was
a son >from her previous marriage. Can you, in anyway help out.

AuctionHouse Bargain #general

Carol Isaak

I've just noticed a wonderful item being offered in the AuctionHouse. A
generous JewishGenner is offering to translate Italian documents - 2 hours
worth -and return the translation in 2-3 days! This translator can even do
Italian written in Hebrew letters ( Judeo-Italian).

But, wait. That's not all... not one, not two, but the "Top three bids
will be honored!", says the translator. This generous offer can be found
at http://www.jewishgen.org/auction/

This is your chance to get those documents translated *And* support the
ongoing operation of JewishGen. So visit the AuctionHouse as soon as you
can.... and start bidding!

Re: Dates, Hebrew/Civil --Twelve months in the Hebrew year #general

Dick@... writes:
Actually, the Muslim calendar has 12, not 13, months. Unlike the
Jewish calendar, it never has a leap month to reconcile it with the solar
year. This means that there are no seasonal holidays, and Ramadan, for
instance, cycles backwards through the solar year, making a complete cycle
every 30 years or so. It also means that a Muslim's 60th birthday, for
instance, would occur about 58 Gregorian (or Jewish) years after birth >>

Dick is totally right. My mind slipped a cog under those "13 months"
claims. I meant to say "is a lunar year." Calculating equivalent Moslem
and Gregorian (or Hebrew) dates requires some effort because the Moslem
year is approx 11 days shorter than the solar year.

Re: Mpls/St. Paul Research #general

Lilli A. Sprintz <spri0037@...>

I had promised some folks to do some research here in the Twin Cities
for some Minnesota ancestors.

It's working, just taking longer than I thought. And also, my computer
went on the blink several weeks ago and it's just getting fixed.

My apologies for not getting back to folks sooner than this.

I DID hit pay dirt. The first three persons I looked information up for
in city directories found several names being requested. Not all, but
this is very hopeful.

Please give me time to work on this over the semester. Even though I
said I would have only two weeks to do this, I'm really taking longer.
I will get back to folks as I have their information.

Talk to you all soon.

Seeking Names of All Jewish American Soldiers Killed in World War One #general

I. Nack <inack@...>

I am currently working on a project to document the names of all
Jewish-American soldiers who were killed in World War One. Approximately
3,000 men fall into this catagory.

If you know the name of any such soldiers I would appreciate receiving the
following information:

Last Name:
First Name:
Home State:
Regiment:
Date of Death:
Burial Location:
Other Relevant Details:

I hope to supplement this information with documents and other information
available >from a variety of archives. I am engaging in this effort for
purely personal reasons which is to ensure that the sacrifices made by
these men are not forgotten. Recently I visited the gravesite of my great
uncle who was one of the 3000 killed and came across a total of 14 other
graves of soldiers near his, all of whom died in WW1 and whose remains were
transferred back to the U.S. for burial in a private Jewish cemetery. A
number of the graves were vandalized and two graves in particular were in
terrible shape - the headstones were virtually unreadable and on the verge
of collapse. All indications are that at least some of these men and their
sacrifices have been all but forgotten - I would like to change this state
of affairs and thus I have decided to undertake this project. What I need
from you all are the names of these men to supplement what I already have
so that as complete a record as possible can be created.

Your assistance would be appreciated and when this project is complete, the
information will be made available for all to use.

Sincerely,
Irwin Nack

Help Locating town of Lubach or Lubir in Volhynia #general

barrychernick@...

I need a little help in locating a town. I have used the Shtetl Seeker
and the Shtetl Finder Gazetteer and have not come up with a good "fit".
Some relatives on their ship passenger list give their place of birth and
last residence as Lubach and/or Lubir, Wolin (I have assume Wolin is
Volhynia since that is where the rest of the family is >from ). These
relatives sailed >from Rotterdam in the 1912. Any ideas? TIA
